Online Chat With Strangers, Done Properly

Online chat with strangers used to mean a blinking cursor and a list of usernames. These days it often means a webcam and a gamble. TalkTo goes back to the cursor: a stranger, a text box, and nothing else on screen.

It runs in your browser, costs nothing and never asks for your name. There are two ways in, one-on-one or the public rooms, and you can use both on the same handle in the same evening.

Your first five minutes

Minute one: confirm you are 18 or older and pick Male, Female or Other. You are handed a handle and an animal. You cannot choose either, which saves ten minutes of agonising over a pun.

Minute two: pick up to five interests, or none, and press start. Most people are matched in a few seconds, and the chat opens with a line about anything you have in common.

Minutes three to five: say something specific, answer something specific back, and decide whether to stay. Want a crowd instead? Go to the rooms and read before you speak. Want to keep someone? Add them.

One-on-one or a room?

One-on-one is a private thread. Two people, no audience, and it closes when either of you leaves. It suits a proper conversation, and it is where the games and friend requests live.

Rooms are the opposite: eight public spaces called General, Dating, International, 18+, Gaming, Music, Anime and Deep Talks, each with a conversation already in motion. You can read the recent messages before joining, and nobody expects a performance. The Dating and 18+ rooms ask you to confirm your age a second time and follow the same content rules as everywhere else.

Plenty of people use both. Rooms are for background noise with company in it. One-on-one is for the person you want to hear properly.

Keeping it safe online

Strangers on the internet are mostly fine and occasionally awful, so the site is built around the occasionally awful. Every message goes through a filter on our server before delivery. Sexual content, slurs, anyone claiming to be under 18, links, email addresses, phone numbers and requests to move to other apps are all stopped.

The filter is a tool, not a promise. It will miss things, which is why the report button matters. Reports carry an excerpt of the chat and go to a queue that a person reads, and repeated ones trigger temporary bans that cover the connection as well as the account.

Your own habits do the rest. Keep your address, your workplace and your worries to yourself. Never send money. If something feels off, skip. The long version lives on the safety page and in the guidelines.

Online chat, answered

Do I need an account to chat with strangers online?

No. Press start and you are given an anonymous handle. An email is optional, and only useful if you want the same handle on another device.

What do I need to get started?

A browser and about ten seconds. It works on phones, tablets and laptops, with nothing to install.

Can I choose who I talk to?

You can choose up to five interests, which the matcher favours for your first 15 seconds in the queue. There is no country filter, and matching by gender is a Premium feature that is not switched on yet.

Are the people on here real?

Each match is another person who is online at that moment, and the matcher does not invent partners. Nobody can promise that no one ever runs a script, which is why spam is filtered, reported and banned.

Is online chat with strangers safe here?

Safer than most places, never risk free. Adults only, every message screened, links and contact details blocked, one-tap blocking, and bans that follow the connection. Keep personal details to yourself.

What does it cost?

Nothing. Chatting, joining rooms, adding friends and playing the games are all free.

Come here. Someone is waiting.

No camera, no name, no sign-up. Just you, a stranger and whatever happens next.
