Random Text Chat: How the Matching Really Works

Random text chat sounds like pure luck, and mostly it is. But the part you control is bigger than you would think, and it starts before you press the button.

TalkTo pairs two people who are both waiting at that moment. This page walks through what the queue does, where your interests fit in, and what to do once somebody lands.

What happens when you press start

You join a single queue with everyone else who is waiting. If another person is already in it, the two of you are paired at once. If not, you wait until somebody arrives, and the lobby tells you when it is taking longer than usual.

Nobody sees your place in line. When a match lands, you both get a chat window, a handle each and a line about anything you share. On a busy evening the whole thing takes seconds. At a slow hour it can take a minute.

Auto-connect is a switch in the lobby. Turn it on and ending one chat drops you straight into the queue for the next one. Perfect for a marathon, terrible for a conversation you wanted to think about.

Interests are a nudge, not a filter

Pick Gaming and Music, and for your first 15 seconds in the queue the matcher looks for somebody who also picked one of them. Once the 15 seconds are up, it stops holding out and pairs you with whoever is waiting. That is deliberate: a hard filter in a small queue means long, empty waits.

Choose tags you would really talk about. Deep Talks says something very different from Memes, and the first line out of your match will often be about the tag you share.

No interests at all? Also fine. You will meet people entirely at random, which is the name of the page.

What to do with a match

Glance at the top of the chat first. You will see their handle, the country they are connecting from and any interests you share. Then pick a move: a wave, an opener, a this-or-that question or a game invite.

If they are good company, tap Good chat. It is private and only shows if you both tap it. If they are not, skip, block or report, depending how bad it got. Reporting someone you were just matched with ends that chat.

Every message is screened before delivery, up to 500 characters at a time, with a gentle speed limit on rapid-fire sending. Once a chat ends, the conversation is gone. For the human side of all this, read about random stranger chat.

Random text chat, answered

Can I choose who I match with?

Only through interests. You can pick up to five, and the matcher favours them for your first 15 seconds in the queue. There is no country or language filter, and matching by gender is a Premium feature that is not switched on yet.

Why did I land someone with nothing in common?

Because the 15 seconds ran out, or because nobody with your tags was waiting. Quiet hours make it more likely. It is a preference, not a promise.

What does Auto-connect do?

It sends you straight back into the queue when a chat ends, with no stop at the start screen. Switch it off if you like a breather between conversations.

Can the same person show up twice?

It is possible, because matches are random. People you have blocked never come back, and people you have added as friends are a message away.

What if nobody is online?

You wait in the queue, and the lobby shows roughly how many people are chatting. Public rooms are a good plan B, since someone is usually mid-sentence there.

Is random text chat free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no card and no trial to cancel.

Come here. Someone is waiting.

No camera, no name, no sign-up. Just you, a stranger and whatever happens next.
