Texting Strangers, Minus the Phone Number

Texting strangers usually starts with who is this and ends with your number in somebody else's contacts. Here it starts and ends in one browser tab, and no phone number ever enters the picture.

TalkTo is not SMS. It is anonymous text chat where you are a handle, they are a handle, and the site does the delivering. Phone numbers, emails and links are blocked on the way through.

The texting rhythm

Texting means short messages, quick replies and the odd long gap. The chat suits that. Send a line, watch for the typing bubble, answer in kind. Three short messages usually beat one wall of text, and a reaction can say what a sentence would only dilute.

Tone does the heavy lifting. Lowercase reads as relaxed. A full stop can read as cold. One emoji is a smile, five is a cry for help. Match the other person's energy for the first few messages and you will rarely go wrong.

Replies may arrive in seconds or never. If they vanish, they probably skipped, and that is just the format. You do not have to chase anyone.

Why numbers are blocked

The quickest route from a friendly chat to a bad week is moving it somewhere private and unwatched. So the filter stops phone numbers, email addresses, links and requests to carry on in other apps. Try one and the message simply does not send, and you are told why.

It can feel strict when two people really do hit it off. The release valve is the friend request. Add each other inside the site and you get private DMs with edit, unsend and read receipts, plus a day streak if you keep it going.

Everything stays under handles, so if a friendship fizzles you can end it with a block. No number to change, no account to hunt down.

Peek inside

From stranger to someone you message daily

When a chat is going well, tap the Good chat heart. If the other person taps it too, you both see it and get an Add button. Accept and they sit in your Friends list, online dot and all.

DMs work like any messenger: sent, read, editable for 15 minutes if you spot a typo, unsendable if you regret it. Message each other on consecutive days and the streak counter starts. It is a tiny thing that makes people turn up.

Notes are the other piece. Sixty characters, visible to your friends for 24 hours. Use one to say you are up late, or that you need a recommendation. More ideas for breaking the ice are on text chat with strangers.

Texting strangers, answered

Do I need a phone number to text strangers here?

Never. Your handle is all anyone gets, and phone numbers typed into a chat are blocked before delivery.

Is this SMS?

No. It runs in your browser over the internet, so there are no carrier charges and nothing lands in your phone's message app.

What if we hit it off and want to swap numbers?

You can't swap them, on purpose. Add each other as friends instead and carry on in DMs inside the site.

Will they be able to find me afterwards?

Only through the site, and only if you are friends. Blocking someone removes them from your friends, ends any shared chat and keeps them out of your queue.

What if someone keeps messaging me?

Block them, and report them if it was unpleasant. Blocked people cannot message you, and repeated reports from different people lead to a ban.

Are my texts stored?

Random chats are not saved after they end. Direct messages to friends are kept until someone unsends them or an account is deleted.

Come here. Someone is waiting.

No camera, no name, no sign-up. Just you, a stranger and whatever happens next.
