USA Chat: Talk to Americans, Text Only

To chat with people from the USA, start from the clock, because it is on your side. The country is big, mostly English-speaking, and always has someone awake. TalkTo is anonymous text chat for adults with no signup, and it is honest about one limit: you cannot ask the queue for the US specifically.

Four time zones across the mainland, plus Alaska and Hawaii, mean somebody is finishing dinner while somebody else heads to bed. Here is how to use that, what to type first, and the small-talk questions Americans like answering.

There is always an evening somewhere

In winter the mainland runs from UTC-5 on the East Coast through Central and Mountain to UTC-8 on the Pacific, with Alaska and Hawaii further out. Most places move their clocks by an hour in summer; Hawaii and most of Arizona do not. Stretch an evening from 7pm in New York to 11pm in Los Angeles and you get seven hours of American night.

So 1am on the East Coast is 10pm in California, still a perfectly normal evening, and the pool does not fall off a cliff when the east goes to bed. From the UK, 11pm is 6pm in New York and 3pm in Los Angeles in winter. From India, early morning lands in the American night. If you are a night person yourself, late night chat is the companion read.

One more thing the chat does for you: the header shows the country your match connects from, and an opener points it out when you are both in the same one. When both of you are in the US, the better question is the state. Nobody owes you a precise answer, but "which state?" is an easy one to give.

How the first minute usually goes

"Hey, what's up?" and "how's it going?" are greetings more than questions. The expected answer is short and returns the favour: "not much, you?" Skip the life story and you sound like a local. What matters is the follow-up, so have one ready.

Good follow-ups are small and slightly silly. Pop, soda or coke, depending on where you grew up. Which pizza style deserves the crown. Whether the Super Bowl is a football game or an advertising event. Everybody has a firm position, and the answer tells you which part of the country you landed in.

Tone goes missing in text, and sarcasm is the first casualty. If you are being dry, type it lowercase or tack on a "lol" or a "jk" so it lands. If a reply sounds sharp, give it the benefit of the doubt once. If it keeps sounding sharp, skip and take the next stranger. Skipping asks you to confirm, so a stray thumb will not end a chat you wanted.

Finding the ones worth keeping

Pick up to five from the list of 28 interests before you go in. Anyone who shares a tag with you gets priority for the opening 15 seconds, and after that the matcher stops being picky. Sports, Movies & TV, Music, Gaming and Memes give you obvious American topics, and Deep Talks is there for the 2am version of the same person.

If one-to-one feels slow, read a room instead. In group chat rooms you can see a room's recent messages before you join, which is more than a random match ever offers. General is the broad one, and Gaming, Music and Anime are themed. Rooms are text only, with no games, and the rules are posted inside each one.

And when you click with someone, give the private heart a tap. If the tap is mutual, a note appears for both of you, with a button to add each other. After that come a friends list, private DMs and day streaks for messaging each other every day, which is a friendly way of saying come back tomorrow.

Answers, no small talk

Is it possible to pick Americans only?

Not with a setting. Everyone joins the same worldwide queue, and nothing in the lobby narrows it by country or by language. What you can change is the hour you join, the interests you pick, and how you open. Joining in a US evening gets you closest to what you asked for.

Is it free?

Yes. Chatting, rooms, games, friends and private messages cost nothing. The start screen wants three things: a tick that you are 18 or older, a tick for the Terms and Privacy Policy, and Male, Female or Other. Then you are handed a random handle and an animal avatar. An email is optional.

Do I need to speak English?

Everything on screen is in English for now, with no language switcher. Many Americans speak Spanish at home, and if you type it and your match reads it, nothing stops that chat. English will take you furthest here, though.

Is there video, and how is this different from Omegle?

There is no video at all, so nobody can appear on your screen unasked. On top of the pairing itself you get a filter on every message, report and block buttons, a friends list, rooms you can read before joining, and 19 games. The longer comparison is on the Omegle alternative page.

Is it safe?

It is adults only, and our server screens every message before it is delivered. Anything sexual, slurs, pasted links, email addresses, phone numbers and people announcing an age below 18 get stopped. It can miss things, so every chat has a report button. Enough separate reports from different people, repeated blocked messages, or a message saying someone is under 18 can trigger a temporary ban while a person reviews, and bans stick to the network connection as well as the account.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in the browser, on iPhone, Android, tablet or laptop. There is no app-store app. For a home-screen shortcut, use the pin or add option your browser already has. Nothing in a chat asks for your camera or microphone.

Come here. Someone is waiting.

No camera, no name, no sign-up. Just you, a stranger and whatever happens next.
