Group Chat Rooms You Can Peek Into First

Group chat rooms suit anyone who finds a one-to-one chat a bit like a first date under a spotlight. In a room nobody has to carry the whole conversation. You can sit near the back, read for ten minutes, and speak when a line actually deserves an answer.

TalkTo runs eight public rooms. General, International and Deep Talks are for conversation, Gaming, Music and Anime are for hobbies, and Dating (18+) and 18+ are for grown-ups. We set them up and look after them, so you are never picking through a directory of ghost towns. You need no account, no camera and no name of your own, because a handle gets handed to you at the door.

Look through the window first

Open any room and its latest messages are right there before you join. You get the pace, the in-jokes, and whether it is three people debating pizza toppings or a crowd mid-argument about a finale. Peek first, commit second. It is how most people enter a party anyway.

Join, and the room moves into your sidebar with a small count beside it showing what you have missed. That lets you drift off into a one-to-one chat and come back to an unread pile instead of an empty screen. When a room gets noisy, hide it. When you are finished with it, leave. Either one takes a single tap.

Each room shows its own rules where you can see them, and a room can be switched to read-only, which means you may read along but not post. Nobody can open a new one. The eight are the whole menu.

Picking a door

General is the front hall, where any ordinary topic is welcome. International is where somebody's breakfast meets somebody else's midnight, which makes "what time is it there?" a perfectly good opener. Gaming, Music and Anime come with the topic already in the name, so there is no icebreaker to invent. Deep Talks runs slower, and a long, thoughtful message fits in there better than a quick one.

Dating (18+) and 18+ are the grown-up pair. Both put the age box in front of you a second time before a single line becomes readable. Inside, nothing loosens. Banter and flirting stay on the right side of the filter, and anything sexual is stopped before anyone sees it. Keep trying and you earn a ban.

When you want one person instead of a crowd, random text chat pairs you with a single stranger. Or sit in the Gaming room for a while and carry on to gaming chat for the matching and the in-chat games.

House manners for a crowd

Walking in mid-conversation, do not announce yourself. Read back a handful of lines, find the thread, and add something to it. "Wait, is that the film from last week?" lands better than "hi everyone" ever will.

Messages top out at 500 characters and the room is paced, so a flood of replies gets a polite nudge to slow down. Every line also passes through our filter before the room sees it. Slurs and sexual content never reach the room. Neither do links, contact details or invitations to carry on in other apps, and you are told why. The filter is software, so it misses things now and then. That is the reason reporting exists.

If somebody is behaving badly in a room, leave and tell us through the support page, because rooms have no report button yet. In a one-to-one chat you can report and block in a tap, and reports land in a pile that a human works through. Several separate reports from different people, or a run of blocked messages, can get an account paused while that human decides. Bans follow the connection an account came from, so a new handle does not wipe the slate. Rooms are plain text only, and the nineteen games wait in one-to-one chats.

Questions people ask before walking in

Can I walk into a room without signing up?

No account. You arrive with an anonymous handle and an animal avatar, confirm your age with a single tick, and you are in. Linking an email is optional and only matters if you want to log back in from another device.

Can I read a room before joining it?

Yes. Open any room and its recent messages are on screen. Reading costs nothing and joining is a separate step, so you can look around before you commit to anything.

What happens to the unread count when I leave a room?

It goes with the room. Leaving drops the room out of your sidebar and the counter disappears. Come back another day and the recent messages are waiting for you to read.

Can I talk out loud in a room?

No. Everything is typed, in rooms and everywhere else on the site. There is no microphone and no camera involved, so there is nothing to switch on or off.

What do I do about someone behaving badly in a room?

Report them, and block them so they cannot reach you again. A person looks at what you reported, and repeated offences lead to bans that follow the connection, not just the handle. Our rules are on the guidelines page.

Can I start a room of my own?

Not at the moment. The eight rooms are created and run by us, and users cannot make new ones.

Come here. Someone is waiting.

No camera, no name, no sign-up. Just you, a stranger and whatever happens next.
