Help and contact

Most questions have a quick answer below. If yours does not, the form at the bottom reaches a real person, who replies by email.

The usual questions

Does TalkTo cost anything?
No. Random chat, rooms, friends, DMs, games and themes are all free to use, and nothing asks for payment details.
Do I have to make an account?
Not in the usual sense. The first time you start, you are given an anonymous handle and avatar. If you want the same identity on another device, you can add an email later. Chatting never requires it.
How do you keep me safe?
Every message is filtered on our server before the other person receives it. Links, numbers and social handles are blocked, you can skip, block or report in a tap, and reports go to a queue a person reads. The safety page has the full picture, including what the filter cannot do.
How old do I have to be?
18 or older, and you confirm it before you start. We cannot check ID, so we rely on the filter, reports and bans. If you think someone is younger, report them as looks under 18.
How does the anonymity work?
Your handle and avatar are assigned at random and are not linked to your real identity. We do not store your raw IP address. We keep a one-way hash of it, which lets us enforce bans and spam limits without being able to read your address back. The privacy policy lists everything we keep.
Can I use the same account on a second device?
Yes, once you have added an email in Settings. On the other device, choose Log in, enter the email and type the six-digit code we send you. Your handle, friends and DMs come with you. There is no password.
How do I report or block someone?
In a one-to-one chat, use Report or Block from the chat header, and in a DM open the menu beside the name. Rooms do not have a report button yet, so write to us through the form below and say which room. Blocking means they are never matched with you again, cannot message you, and any shared chat ends. A report also sends a short excerpt of the chat to our queue.
I was banned. What now?
Temporary bans lift by themselves. If you think a ban was a mistake, tell us through the form below and include what you were doing when it happened. Longer bans are looked at one by one. Making a fresh account to get round a ban will not work, because bans cover the connection too.
How do I delete my account?
Open Settings, go to Account and use Delete account under Danger zone. It removes your handle, linked email, friends, DMs, notes and history, and blanks the messages you posted in rooms. It cannot be undone.
The chat will not connect, or keeps reconnecting
Check your internet, then refresh the page. If you refresh in the middle of a chat and come back within 30 seconds, you rejoin the same conversation, though earlier messages are not shown again. Strict work or school networks sometimes block live connections, so try another network if nothing helps.
What happens after I report someone?
The report, with a short excerpt of the chat, lands in a queue that a person reviews. Several reports from different people, or repeated blocked messages, trigger an automatic temporary ban in the meantime. Whether a ban becomes longer or permanent is a human decision.
What are the public rooms?
Eight open group rooms made by us, covering topics like gaming, music, anime and deep talks. You can read recent messages before joining. Once you join, a room sits in your sidebar with an unread count until you leave. Everyone in a room sees what you post, so treat it as public.
What can the person I match with see?
Your handle, your avatar, the country your connection is in, and any interests you share. They also see what you type, naturally. They do not see your gender, email, name or city.
Can I change my handle?
No. Handles are handed out at random when you start and stay with the account. If you really dislike yours, you can delete the account and start again, but your friends and history will not follow.
How do the themes unlock?
Three themes are open from the start. The other nine unlock as you complete chats, beginning with Cherry Blossom at three. A chat only counts when both of you have said something.

Still stuck?

Tell us what happened and we will reply by email. Never put a password or anything sensitive in the message. We will not ask for either.
