Text Chat With Strangers: Just Words

Text chat with strangers is the version of talking where you get to edit. You can read their message twice, think, write something kinder or funnier, and press send when it is ready.

TalkTo is built around that. A stranger, a text box, 500 characters a message, and no camera or microphone anywhere in the building.

Why typing makes people braver

Take away the face and the voice and something funny happens: people say what they mean. Shy people get quick. Quick people get honest. Somebody who has rehearsed a sentence for a week finally gets to send it.

There are practical gains too. You can chat at 2am without waking the house, on a bus with no good place for sound, or on a work break where headphones are not an option. English is not your first language? Typing gives you the time to find the word.

One limit is worth naming. Text strips out tone, and a joke with no emoji can read like a threat. Over-signal. A lowercase line, a smiley or a quick kidding does a lot when the other person cannot see your eyebrows.

What the chat hands you to work with

A typing bubble shows when your match is writing, so you know a reply is coming and do not fire a second message into the gap. Reactions answer without words: a heart, a laugh, a wave, a fire. Emoji are one tap away.

Openers cover the blank moments, three at a time, and you can shuffle until one sounds like you. The this-or-that question puts the same choice in front of both of you and reveals the answers together.

Would you rather do something than say something? Send a game invite. Chess, Connect Four or Word Hunt will turn a stalled chat into a rematch.

What gets stopped before it reaches you

Every text message is checked on our server before it is delivered. Sexual content, slurs, links, email addresses, phone numbers and requests to continue on other apps do not go through, and the sender is told why. A little annoying for them, mostly invisible for you.

The check is a word-and-pattern filter, built mainly around English. Link, email and number blocking works in any language, but slang and creative spelling will occasionally slip past. When that happens, hit Report. A person reads the queue.

Text is also the gentlest format for strangers, because the only thing to record is words, and you choose which ones. Keep it light, keep your details yours, and read the safety page for the rest.

Text chat, answered

Is text chat with strangers really anonymous?

You are a handle and an animal avatar. Your name, email and photo are never requested, and the person you are matched with sees only your handle, your country and any interests you share.

How long can a message be?

Up to 500 characters. Anything longer is refused with a nudge to shorten it, which keeps chats moving.

Can I send pictures or voice notes?

No. There are no photos, files or recordings, only words and emoji. That is on purpose.

Can they see me typing?

Yes, a typing bubble shows while you write. Handy, and occasionally nerve-racking.

Does it work if English is not my first language?

Yes. You can type in other languages, and links, emails and numbers are blocked in all of them. The word filter is built mainly around English, so report anything unpleasant that gets through.

Does it keep a record of my chats?

Random chats are not saved once they end. A short excerpt of your latest chat is held so a report can include it, and your History lists who you talked to and for how long, without the messages.

Come here. Someone is waiting.

No camera, no name, no sign-up. Just you, a stranger and whatever happens next.
