India Chat: Talk to People from India, No Camera

Want to chat with people from India? Two things to know. TalkTo is anonymous, typed and free to use, and it runs in a phone browser. It also matches from one worldwide queue, so you cannot order Indians by country, only improve your odds of finding them.

India helps you here more than most countries do: one clock across the whole nation, no seasonal changes, and a wide spread of languages that rewards a good first question. Below are the hours, the languages and the starters.

One country, one clock

India keeps a single time, UTC+5:30, and has no daylight saving, so the gap between your clock and theirs only changes when your own clocks do. Evenings, roughly 8pm to midnight, are the easiest window to aim at.

Convert it once. At 10pm in India it is 4:30pm in London in winter and 5:30pm in summer, 11:30am in New York in winter, and 8:30am on the US West Coast. A Delhi night turns out to be your lunch break or your morning coffee, which beats waiting up until midnight at home.

Once you are matched, the country your match connects from appears in the chat header. If you are both connecting from India, an opener says so, which hands you a ready-made first line: "so we are both in India, whereabouts?" Asking for a city is fair, handing it over is optional, and nobody owes you an answer either way.

Languages: ask, do not assume

English is the safe first line, because the menus are English only for now. But India recognises 22 scheduled languages, and Hindi is one of them. Reply in Tamil, Bengali or Marathi and, if your match can read it, nobody in the chat will think it odd. There is no language filter, so you get whoever the queue serves up.

Casual typing is often Hindi in Roman letters with English mixed through it, usually called Hinglish: "kya haal hai", "sab theek?", "yaar". If you do not follow, ask. If you do, answer in kind and the mood lifts.

Assuming everyone speaks Hindi is the commonest slip from outside the country. Spend five words instead: "Hindi, English, or something else?" It is easy to answer and it saves a stumble.

Starters that beat where are you from

Cricket gets a reply, especially when a big series or the IPL is on, so name a match instead of the sport. Films go deeper than the Bollywood label: Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali cinema each have devoted audiences. "What did you rewatch last?" will get you a title and a story.

Food is a gentle argument everyone enjoys: chai or coffee, whose city has the best street snack, what a proper biryani contains. Pick a side and defend it for three messages. For studies and gadgets, tick Tech or Books & Reading, and for something slower try Deep Talks. You get up to five tags, and people with a matching tag get a head start of 15 seconds before the matcher stops caring.

Stuck for words? Challenge them to a game instead. Nineteen are built in, and Chess, Checkers and Cup Pong carry no vocabulary at all. Plain text is light on a phone connection, which is part of why chat without video suits it so well, and for the small hours at your end, late night chat covers the slow, honest kind of conversation.

The short answers, before you ask

Can I filter the chat to people in India only?

No. The matcher has no country filter and no language filter, and every search starts from whoever is waiting. The real levers are the hour (an Indian evening, UTC+5:30) and your interests, which the matcher favours for the first 15 seconds.

Do I have to download an app, and will it eat my data?

No app, no store listing, no install. Open the site in a phone or laptop browser and go. If you want an icon on your home screen, your browser's own menu can pin the site as a shortcut. Typed lines are tiny next to pictures or video, and neither appears inside a chat.

Does it cost money?

Nothing described on this page costs money. No card, no phone number and no long form stand between you and the first chat, and your handle is picked for you at random.

Do I need to speak Hindi?

No. English is the common ground, and the buttons are English for now. Type Hindi, Hinglish or any language you and your match can both read. If you hit a wall, a game of Tic-Tac-Toe is a decent translator.

Is there video?

No, not anywhere. There is no camera access and no microphone access, which keeps your face, your room and whoever walks past the door out of it.

Is it safe, and how do reports work?

Adults only, and a filter on our server checks each message before it is delivered. It stops sexual content, slurs, requests to carry the chat to other apps, and anything that reads like a web address, an email or a phone number. The sender is told why the message was held back, and it goes nowhere. A filter is not a guarantee, and its word lists lean toward English, so Hindi typed in Roman letters can slip past. When that happens, report it, or block the person. Blocking is the quicker tool: they drop out of your future matches for good, lose the ability to write to you, and any chat in progress is cut off along with the friendship.

Come here. Someone is waiting.

No camera, no name, no sign-up. Just you, a stranger and whatever happens next.
